Professionals know there are tons of sweat-inducing occasions that call for a strong, reliable deodorant, whether a company-wide presentation or a meeting with a new client. So having a product that actually works is important. Some deodorants also offer some degree of sweat protection, which also matters; no one wants to give a quarterly update with big wet stains marking their armpits.

While most people use deodorant on autopilot, we want to remind you to stop and think about how well yours is actually working for you. Does it keep you odor-free from your commute all the way through a long workday? What about if you’re heading to happy hour afterward, or planning to squeeze in a quick session on the treadmill or exercise bike before dinner—does it keep you smelling fresh even then?

To find out which deodorants really work, we asked our testers to try several different brands and report back—all with the goal of helping you find the best deodorant for you. Read on to see what we recommend.

  • Our thoughts: Our tester appreciated the quick-drying time and workout-proof odor protection.
  • Who it’s for: Professionals looking for a product that can stand up to heavy sweating and can also tackle sweat
  • What makes it different: Handles heavy workouts and also helps reduce sweating

Pros

  • Quick drying time
  • Excellent odor protection
  • Helps reduce wetness

Cons

  • The highest cost per ounce in the lineup, which may be a drawback for some

Our Thoughts on Freaks of Nature Everyday Endurance Deodorant

According to the company’s website, Everyday Endurance Deodorant “works with your microbiome to stop odor at the source while letting good bacteria thrive.” This deodorant purportedly offers 48-hour protection and is formulated without baking soda or aluminum; it’s also dermatologist-tested.

Our tester, Charlotte, tried Freaks of Nature Everyday Endurance Deodorant in the Santal Dune scent and said, “It’s very easy to apply. It’s more of a gel texture, and it doesn’t take long to dry, which is something I love about it.” She also said it didn’t feel heavy or sticky and rated the application a 4 out of 5.

Charlotte rated the odor protection a 4 out of 5, explaining, “The odor protection lasts throughout my workouts, which is a huge plus since I do sweat a lot.”

Freaks of Nature as best deodorant

The sweat protection was even better, with Charlotte noting, “This does help reduce wetness. I tend to sweat a lot, so I loved how well this worked. I didn’t feel like I would sweat through my shirt or anything, which is another plus.” She rated the sweat protection a 4.5 out of 5.

Another advantage: Charlotte appreciated that this product didn’t leave any stains on her clothing. Overall, she praised this product’s quick-drying time and odor and sweat protection—which we’d say makes it an ideal choice for busy professionals looking for a reliable deodorant that can keep odor and sweat at bay during high-pressure presentations and can also be applied quickly before running out the door.

at Harry’s

  • Our thoughts: We were impressed with the five-star odor and sweat protection
  • Who it’s for: Working professionals looking for a scented option that delivers on both odor and sweat reduction
  • What makes it different: The easy application and refreshing feeling

Pros

  • Very easy to apply
  • Left no residue on skin or clothes
  • Standout odor and sweat protection

Cons

  • No fragrance-free option

Our Thoughts on Harry’s

This deodorant is designed to offer 48-hour odor control, and it’s made with ginger root, which is meant to help soothe the delicate underarm area. The formula is deemed suitable for people who have sensitive skin, and this particular product is meant to neutralize odor as opposed to minimizing wetness. (If you need the latter, the company also offers a product that’s meant to offer both odor protection and sweat control, though read on to see what our tester said about this product’s sweat control.)

A member of our testing team, Dan, used this product and reported, “The deodorant glided easily across my skin. When I’ve used some gel deodorants in the past, they’ve felt too smooth, and the deodorant feels slimy, sticky, and takes a while to dry. That wasn’t the case here at all.” He rated the application a 5 out of 5. “While I normally prefer a powder or hybrid deodorant because gel can take too long to dry,” said Dan, “I felt refreshed as soon as I applied Harry’s, with no residue left behind. This might sound silly, but it was similar to how my mouth feels after brushing my teeth—only it was my underarms.”

Harry's as best deodorant

When it came to odor protection, Dan said, “I admittedly don’t sweat or smell a ton during the day, even after exercising. So, while body odor isn’t typically an issue for me, I felt extra protected with Harry’s deodorant.” He rated the odor protection a 5 out of 5.

“I really don’t experience a lot of sweat buildup during the day, but that felt even truer when using Harry’s,” said Dan, adding, “I didn’t see any marks on my clothing or feel the cling of any residue—not that I was expecting to, since this is a colorless gel deodorant.” Dan rated the sweat protection a 5 out of 5.

Dan said his skin felt normal and refreshed throughout the day and suggested it would be good for people heading into an office who want to feel fresh and confident all day long and who don’t want to risk damaging nice clothing. As Dan explained, “What makes Harry’s stand out is the cleanliness. There was little to no mess on the skin and clothes, and the applicator controls the product amount well—which is ideal for busy professionals or anyone who’s in a rush.”

Best Aluminum-Free Deodorant: Native

at Amazon

  • Our thoughts: Our tester was ready to replace her previous deodorant with this one, thanks to its easy application and remarkable odor protection.
  • Who it’s for: Professionals who prioritize ingredients and prefer an aluminum-free deodorant.
  • What makes it different: The ingredient list that’s designed to be “clean” (even though that’s not an officially regulated term)

Pros

  • Larger surface area makes it easier to apply
  • Excellent odor protection
  • Didn’t irritate sensitive skin

Cons

  • Moderate sweat protection, which may not be ideal for heavy sweaters

Our Thoughts on Native

Native says its deodorant offers 72-hour odor protection, and the vegan formula is free of baking soda and contains so-called “clean” ingredients—but it’s helpful to remember that that’s a marketing term with no official definition.

Sophia, a member of our testing team, tried Native’s Sea Salt & Cedar deodorant and said, “I love how big this deodorant is—it’s larger than typical women’s deodorants like Secret or Dove, so it’s easier to apply on the underarms. I feel like it’s quicker and covers more surface area than my previous deodorant.” Sophia said the deodorant has a “creamy or lotion-y” texture and that it “glides very smoothly across my skin” without feeling rough or dry, rating it a 4.5 out of 5 for its easy application.

“I love the scent of the deodorant, and I feel like it lasts all day,” said Sophia, noting, “My pits still smell fresh” after a long workday. She added, “I also wore this deodorant in the hot sun all day at the beach, and I felt like it kept me pretty fresh. Even though I was baking and sweating in the sun, it took several hours for any sort of odor to appear. And even then, I could only smell it when directly sniffing under my arms.” She rated the odor protection a 4.5 out of 5.

Native as best deodorant

Sophia said there was good sweat protection as well, explaining, “The Native deodorant did a good job keeping me dry. Throughout the workday, I felt completely dry. When sitting at the beach or doing a workout, though, I did notice a bit more wetness.” She rated the sweat protection a 4 out of 5.

Sophia also said this deodorant didn’t leave any white marks, even on black clothing. She also reported no skin irritation, even though she said she has sensitive skin that has reacted to other deodorants. As Sophia concluded, “I would definitely use this over and over again as my new go-to deo!” This would be an excellent option for professionals with sensitive skin who don’t sweat heavily and are primarily looking for excellent odor protection in an easy-to-apply deodorant.

Best Deodorant for Women: Dove Aluminum Free

at Amazon

  • Our thoughts: We appreciated how quickly this deodorant dried and its great odor protection
  • Who it’s for: Professionals with busy schedules who prefer the ease of a super-fast spray option
  • What makes it different: A fast-drying spray

Pros

  • Dries instantly
  • Very easy to apply
  • Some sweat protection

Cons

  • Some may not want a spray formula
  • Claim of 72-hour odor protection felt like a stretch
  • No fragrance-free option

Our Thoughts on Dove Aluminum Free

This spray deodorant is designed to offer odor protection for 72 hours, and the company says the product’s formula is enriched with moisturizers and is also suitable for “all-over body use,” except for intimate areas.

A member of our testing team, Bella, tried Dove Beauty Alcohol Free & Aluminum-Free Whole Body Deodorant Spray in the Coconut Vanilla scent and said, “The deodorant is super easy to apply because it’s a spray. It dries almost instantly, and I’m able to use it even while having my shirt on.” She rated the application a 5 out of 5.

The odor protection lasts at least 24 hours, according to Bella, who rated this deodorant 5 out of 5 in this regard. “I give it a five because it holds up very well throughout the entire day, but the one caveat is that it is advertised to be 72-hour odor protection and I don’t think that is accurate,” she said.

Dove as best deodorant

The deodorant is not an antiperspirant, so it does not primarily inhibit sweat. That being said, while wearing this deodorant, my underarms did not become overly sweaty when doing intense physical activity or while outside in the heat. While working or moving throughout the house, my underarms felt dry throughout the day.” She rated the sweat protection a 4 out of 5.

Bella also noted that this product didn’t leave any marks on her clothing, and overall, she loved the lightweight formula. “Some spray deodorants will leave a wet feeling or need to dry, but this one does not have any sort of liquidity or wetness to it and dries instantaneously,” said Bella. It’s a good option for professionals who prefer a spray formula that’s lightweight and offers both odor and sweat protection, while still being aluminum-free.

Best Deodorant for Men: Old Spice

at Amazon

  • Our thoughts: Our tester was pleased with this deodorant’s odor protection, even with heavy sweating
  • Who it’s for: Busy professionals who need a good, basic deodorant that fights odors all day long
  • What makes it different: This product does contain aluminum

Pros

  • Didn’t leave any residue
  • Very good odor protection
  • Smooth application without any tugging at skin

Cons

  • Contains aluminum, which some people may prefer to avoid
  • Company website showed inaccurate product information
  • No fragrance-free option

Our Thoughts on Old Spice

According to the online product description, Old Spice Men’s Deodorant “destroys underarm odor” for 48 hours. However, while on the company website, we also noticed a mistake: The product description incorrectly states that this deodorant and antiperspirant is aluminum-free. When we contacted the company, a customer service representative confirmed that the product does contain aluminum. This is one of the only deodorants in our lineup that contains aluminum, as it’s designed to offer both odor and sweat protection, but if you prefer aluminum-free deodorant, we included plenty of other options in this lineup.

Logan, a member of our testing team, used Old Spice Deodorant in the Cashmere & Vanilla Wood scent and said, “This deodorant is really easy to apply. It glides smoothly and is very creamy, so it doesn’t tug on my skin at all.” Logan also added that this product didn’t leave any white residue, and he rated the application a 4 out of 5.

Old Spice as best deodorant

He was impressed by the odor protection, noting, “It does a really good job at odor protection. I don’t need to reapply it at all throughout the day.” Logan said that with other deodorants, he’s had to reapply, so Old Spice offered a definite improvement. He rated the odor protection a 4 out of 5.

Even though this deodorant contains aluminum, Logan said, “This deodorant does not reduce wetness much, and it doesn’t stop me from sweating. If I get hot or stressed, I do notice my underarms still get damp even with this deodorant.” He rated the sweat protection a 3 out of 5.

  • Our thoughts: Our tester was wowed by this deodorant’s performance, saying the odor protection lasted all day—and evening—long
  • Who it’s for: Busy folks who need to run from one thing to the next and don’t want to worry about underarm odor
  • What makes it different: Designed to offer odor protection for up to three days

Pros

  • Standout odor protection, even after a 17-hour day
  • Excellent sweat protection
  • Didn’t leave any residue on clothing

Cons

  • Contains aluminum, which some people may prefer to avoid
  • Doesn’t dry immediately

Our Thoughts on Secret Clinical Strength Invisible Solid Antiperspirant Deodorant

This deodorant is “specially formulated to provide 100-hour protection against stress sweat,” with the company website specifically noting that the product fights sweat produced by stress, heat, and activity. This product also contains aluminum, something to note if you prefer to avoid that ingredient.

A member of our testing team, Peyton, tested this product and said it was very easy to apply and glides smoothly on skin because it’s a gel. “However, as it is a gel, it takes about 30 to 45 seconds to fully dry down,” added Peyton, saying that upon initial application, the product feels somewhat heavy, but after it dries, the product is barely noticeable on the skin. Peyton rated this deodorant a 3 out of 5 for its application.

Secret as best deodorant

Peyton was very impressed by this deodorant’s odor protection, though, saying, “I have worn this product for the last several days, including during multiple 17-hour workdays. It lasted the entire day—through an eight-hour shift, a walk across the city, a four-hour rehearsal, and two subway rides—without reapplication. At the end of the day, I still smelled fresh!” She rated the odor protection a 5 out of 5, noting that she’s used to having to reapply deodorant multiple times a day, so she considers this product “a game-changer.”

Also impressive, according to our tester: “My underarms feel bone-dry when I am wearing this product,” said Peyton, explaining that she went on walks and noticed multiple parts of her body were sweaty from heat and exertion. “And yet my armpits remained dry,” she said, rating the sweat protection a 5 out of 5.

Peyton said this deodorant didn’t leave any marks, stains, or residue on clothing, and recommended it for professionals with intensely busy days who want to ensure their deodorant doesn’t stain their clothing.

Why the Right Deodorant Matters to Professionals

If you’ve ever given a presentation at work, or even just felt self-conscious raising your hand in a meeting, you’re well aware that public speaking usually equals some amount of sweat. And it’s not just public speaking; even just running from meeting to meeting or working quickly to meet a looming deadline can prompt you to sweat more. So, wearing an effective deodorant is important, especially if you’re working in-office around colleagues. The right product can help you feel confident and can even protect your clothing as a bonus—meaning no residue or sweat stains.

How We Tested and Selected the Best Deodorant

Here’s what we considered when looking for the best deodorant.

Dove as best deodorant

Application

We looked for products that were easy to apply, whether sprays or solids. For solid deodorants, we tested whether the product glided on the skin without uncomfortable tugging or pulling. Testers also reported how long it took for a deodorant to dry.

Formula

We included a range of formulations, including ones that contain aluminum and ones that don’t.

Odor and Sweat Protection

The most important aspect of any deodorant: Does it actually work? We asked testers to note whether the deodorants in our lineup actually prevented odor, as well as whether they offered any sweat protection.

Value

There are many ways to assess value, and one way is cost. Here’s a breakdown of each product’s price, as well as the cost per ounce.

What to Avoid in Deodorant

While most commercially sold deodorants shouldn’t cause reactions in the majority of the population, there are some things to keep in mind.

Harry's as best deodorant
  • Avoid applying deodorant to any areas not specified in the manufacturer’s instructions. Deodorants and antiperspirants should only be used as directed.
  • Avoid applying deodorant and antiperspirant on irritated skin or open wounds.
  • If you have sensitive skin, consider avoiding formulas that contain fragrances or baking soda, as these ingredients can sometimes cause reactions.

How to Find the Best Deodorant for You

When shopping for deodorant, consider the following.

Native as best deodorant

Your Skin Type

Everyone’s skin needs are different, so be sure to choose a product that suits your skin’s needs. For example, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to choose a product with a fragrance-free formula that doesn’t contain any baking soda.

Scents

Personal preferences vary widely when it comes to scented products, especially when it’s for an item applied directly to the body. Think about whether you want a scent at all—many products are available in fragrance-free formulations—and if so, which fragrances you typically gravitate toward. Keep in mind you’ll smell this product day after day, so it should be something you think you’ll still enjoy after a few weeks of wearing it.

Product Type

Deodorants come in different forms, with our lineup including a spray option and solid formulas, including gel deodorants. Each may feel slightly different when applied and may have a different drying time, so think about the pros and cons of each and which is best suited to your lifestyle and personal preferences.

Fortune’s Final Thoughts

Secret as best deodorant

Freaks of Nature Everyday Endurance Deodorant is recommended for professionals who want reliable odor protection, even while squeezing in a workout during their lunch break, and who want something that’s easy to apply and fast-drying—so it won’t slow you down in the morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant?

Their primary purposes differ, though oftentimes you’ll find both a deodorant and an antiperspirant combined in one product. Deodorant, as the name implies, is meant to target odor. Similarly, an antiperspirant—as the name suggests—is meant to reduce sweat. Ingredients typically differ, with antiperspirants often containing an aluminum salt.

What is the most effective type of deodorant?

One type isn’t necessarily more effective than another; it’s really about personal preference, which means taking into account your skin type and any preferences you may have regarding scent, spray versus solid, and so on.

How often should you apply deodorant?

We recommend following the manufacturer’s instructions when using a deodorant. Many formulas are now designed to last a full day or even longer, so a once-daily application is generally fine. However, if you require additional applications, be sure to review the instructions.
