Aspen Institute director: Wealth is not a luxury, but three in four U.S. households don’t have enough

The Aspen Institute Financial Security Program has created the essential wealth metric as a new way to measure not only how much a family needs to pay the bills but also how much they need for full resilience, prosperity, and well-being. Our finding: Only 26% of U.S. households have essential wealth, the milestone at which families hold multiple appreciating assets—like a home and a retirement account—at levels that allow them to comfortably take risks and plan for the future. For a household in its 30s, for example, that means about $120,000 in net worth and six weeks of take-home pay in liquid savings.

The largest chunk of households, however—43%—are stuck in the middle. There, families have net worth sufficient to cover three months of expenses at the federal poverty line, but fall short of the baseline for meaningful resilience and the foundation for growing prosperity.

Practically, this means they don’t have enough to save for a down payment or have to choose between saving for the emergency car repair or contributing toward retirement—the exact kind of activities that build enough wealth for true financial security. Nor does the gap close with age: Just 24% of households ages 50 to 64 reach essential wealth, leaving most approaching retirement without that security. (The estimates of where households fall on the essential wealth path are based on Aspen FSP calculations of savings and wealth data from the 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances.)

What’s more, when families don’t own the assets critical for reaching essential wealth, they are not only more vulnerable to financial shocks, but they’re also missing out on these assets’ compounding gains, which, in recent decades, have far outstripped income growth. That missed opportunity adds up: Between 2000 and 2024, home prices rose about 60% after inflation and the S&P 500’s total return was roughly 200% after inflation, while real median household income rose about 15%.

This reality matters far beyond any one family. When millions of households are using nearly everything they earn to cover the rising costs of basic needs—fuel, food, housing, health care, child care, and other necessities—the whole economy becomes more fragile. A financial shock such as a job loss or medical bill can force families to cut spending, take on debt, and fall further behind. But when families have savings and assets to fall back on, they can recover more quickly without curtailing their choices or derailing their dreams. In this way, financially resilient families are the foundation of a resilient economy.

The essential wealth framework confirms what many of us already know from experience: Wealth is not a luxury. It’s what allows us to invest in our future, seize opportunity, and handle whatever life throws our way. So the metric isn’t simply a new statistic. It gives leaders a way to design programs that help families build wealth and measure whether those efforts are working—because getting this right, at scale, is both possible and necessary.
