No, AI is not your employee

In 1961, a fiberglass pole replaced the metal one used in pole vaulting and athletes broke the world record 19 times in a single decade. In cycling, better aerodynamics alone accounted for nearly half of all performance improvement over the sport’s history. Graphite rackets transformed tennis. Polyurethane swimsuits were so effective they eventually were banned (yet some records set during those two years still stand).

None of these technologies competed. They were not athletes. They did not collect medals, train for years, or make split-second decisions under pressure. Rather, each represents a performance-enhancing technology that allowed extraordinary humans to exceed what was previously possible.

That’s the right mental model for AI.

The Wrong Metaphor Is Leading Us Astray

A strange language has crept into how we talk about artificial intelligence at work. AI is your “colleague.” Agents are your “team members.” Humans are “managers” overseeing the output of digital reports.

There’s a kernel of usefulness here: thinking about how you govern and oversee autonomous systems can borrow from how you manage high-agency people. But the metaphor breaks down the moment you apply it to workforce decisions.

AI can generate code, synthesize research, and orchestrate workflows at speeds no human team can match. However, AI is not a replacement for your people. It’s performance-enhancing technology that lets them break new records.

Move as Fast as Your Ideas

For decades, the bottleneck in business was execution. You had a bold idea and spent months slogging through the mechanics of building it. Talented people were constrained by brute-force labor.

AI shatters that constraint. Within my own engineering organization, teams increased shipping throughput 1.65x year-over-year and improved time to production by 21% with more than 76% of code changes AI-assisted. Through Kiro, our AI coding assistant, every employee can now build workflows, sort data, and automate the administrative work that used to consume their weeks.

Consider the World Surf League. For 50 years, the sport’s performance data was buried in spreadsheets dating back to the 1970s. Commentators spent hours before each broadcast hunting through fragmented files for athlete stats and career histories. Working with AllCloud, the league unified all of it into a real-time AI platform, cutting broadcast prep time by 80% and freeing the broadcasters to do what they do best: tell stories, not dig through spreadsheets.

Or consider United Airlines. More than half a million passengers move through United’s network each day, each on different routes, schedules and journeys. A few years ago, the airline launched an initiative to give passengers real-time explanations when delays occurred. The concept was a hit, but handcrafted responses couldn’t scale to that level of complexity. Today, AI drafts more than half of those delay messages. The result isn’t fewer people. It’s a customer experience that humans designed, delivered at a volume no team of any size ever could.

In every case, the pattern is the same: AI automates the process. Humans deliver the new value. And once they do, that standard becomes the new floor.

AI is Setting New Records

Once the fiberglass pole existed, no pole vaulters went back. The technology didn’t just enable new records; it raised the bar for everyone.

AI is doing the same thing across every industry. Trying to compete without it is like entering a Grand Slam with a wooden tennis racket. You wouldn’t even qualify.

Yet too many companies are still treating AI like a hiring decision: “how many people can we replace?” That framing misses the point entirely. AI isn’t competing for a seat at the table. It’s changing the table.

The companies pulling ahead are not asking how to do the same work with fewer people. They are asking the bigger question: what can our people accomplish now that couldn’t before? Where is the bar today, and how do we set it higher than anyone else can reach?

In this era, the standard is not “keep up.” It is “raise the bar so high that keeping up is the other guy’s problem.” Dream small and you are already off the field.

AI is not an employee. It’s the fiberglass pole or the graphite tennis racket. It’s technology that lets your best people perform at a level they couldn’t reach without it.

After all, the records have always been set by humans who embraced better tools. Never by the tools themselves.
