Trump eyes privatizing US Postal Service, Washington Post says

President-elect Donald Trump has expressed interest in privatizing the US Postal Service, the Washington Post reported.

Trump has discussed the possibility of overhauling the agency with Howard Lutnick, his nominee for commerce secretary, as well as with other transition officials, the newspaper said, citing three unidentified people with knowledge of the matter. The president-elect said the government shouldn’t subsidize the loss-making organization, the people added.

USPS lost $9.5 billion in the financial year ended Sept. 30, amid a decline in mail volume and slower-than-anticipated parcel shipping, the Post said. It’s not clear how Trump plans on overhauling the service. 

During his first term in office, Trump appointed Louis DeJoy as Postmaster to oversee the embattled agency, whose efforts to cut costs came under criticism following months of service delays and backlogs.
