Lawn signs that sit in front of properties for sale often call out special features to turn people’s heads. “Lakefront views” or “open house” are commonplace. But people driving by 56 Main St. in Millbury, Mass. are doing double takes, as the “for sale” sign out front warns prospective buyers the property is “Probably Haunted.”
The house, built in 1850, until recently served as a funeral home. It’s listed for $769,000 and located about six miles southeast of Worcester. No word if the potential ghosts lean more toward Casper or the twins from The Shining.
Although it has served as a funeral home since 1948, according to the listing, the 5,188-square-foot house was built as a residence. It has three bedrooms and 1.5 baths.
“This could easily be converted back to a single-family home,” the listing reads. “First floor features several massive rooms suitable for a variety of uses, office space, and two half baths. Second floor offers three-plus bedrooms, one full and two half baths, multiple sitting rooms, multiple washer/dryer hookups, two kitchens, cozy sunlit porches, and some rooms just waiting to suit your vision.”
There’s also a walk-up attic, a full basement, and a three-car garage. And of course, the potential for ghosts, though those aren’t guaranteed.
Americans have a hard time resisting a haunted house, especially as Halloween draws near. The Millbury abode is hardly the first to utilize potential specters as an amenity. Last year, the house featured in The Amityville Horror went up for sale, with buyers paying $1.46 million for it early this year. And in 2017, Beckett’s Castle, a 2,000-square-foot estate in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, was listed for $3.35 million. Built in 1874, that elaborate home was said to be haunted by the ghost of Sylvester Beckett, an eccentric writer and lawyer.
