Delta is making some changes to its SkyMiles frequent flyer program that not all customers are going to like.

The carrier, on Wednesday, announced a transformation that focuses more on the dollars passengers spend, rather than the distance they travel. And American Express card members are going to find it harder to get into Delta Sky Clubs in airports.

Starting in 2024, earning status will depend entirely on how much you spend. The company will use a standard called Medallion Qualifying Dollars as the rubric for status. Here’s what you’ll need to shell out for Medallion membership:

  • Silver Medallion – $6,000 MQDs
  • Gold Medallion – $12,000 MQDs
  • Platinum Medallion – $18,000 MQDs
  • Diamond Medallion – $35,000 MQDs

The good news is, not all of that has to be spent on flights. Car rentals, hotel stays, and certain vacation packages can be credited to the total. And people who hold Delta loyalty credit cards will receive one MQD for every $10 (if you have a Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business American Express card) or $20 (SkyMiles Platinum and SkyMiles Platinum Business cards) you spend on everyday purchases.

Delta American Express members will also no longer receive status boost benefits or a waiver to MQD requirements.

The changes will not impact 2024 status, but come 2025, some people used to frequent flyer perks will see several less than they’re used to.

Sky Club changes

Beyond the major changes to its frequent flyer program, Delta is also restricting access to its Sky Club lounges, where flyers on layovers can grab a bite to eat or a drink for free.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2024, the carrier said, holders of Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Delta SkyMiles Platinum Business American Express Card Members will no longer be eligible for club access. And flyers who opt for a Basic Economy ticket won’t be allowed in at all, even if they have a qualifying credit card.

And starting Feb. 1, 2025, holders of the American Express Platinum Card or the Delta Reserve American Express Card will see their number of allowed visits capped. Platinum Card holders will be allowed six visits per year, while the Delta Reserve Card holders will get 10 annual visits.
