Discord CEO hints at NFT, crypto integration

In reply to a Substack post discussing how Discord could become a key player in the NFT and Web3 space, Citron tweeted a screenshot of an internal hackfest project that showed Discord integration with the Ethereum wallet app MetaMask and cryptocurrency wallet app WalletConnect.

The tweet seemed to indicate Citron could be interested in some sort of NFT or cryptocurrency integration with Discord.

More than just a messaging app, Discord has become the center of communications for gamers and interest groups of many types, including some related to NFTs. If it did integrate crypto wallets such as MetaMask and WalletConnect into the platform, it could become a new center for NFT galleries and position itself nicely in a Web3 decentralized internet.

Along with Citron’s tweet, a screenshot also resurfaced of an expired survey sent around to certain Discord users earlier this year that asks them their thoughts on NFTs, decentralized finance (DeFi), and Web3 (a totally decentralized internet).

While Meta, formerly Facebook, is trying to become the biggest player in the metaverse—a digital world for both business and entertainment—Discord is already home to the communities that may make up this digital universe. Communities including gamers, influencers, and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) that run cryptocurrencies and other projects.

Discord did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication. It has not confirmed that it is planning on incorporating any features related to NFTs or cryptocurrency but in a statement sent to the Verge, the company said, “We’re always exploring and hacking away at things we think will improve Discord for all the communities we serve.”

The community chat app would be the latest in a sea of companies that have jumped onto the NFT and cryptocurrency bandwagon. Companies such as McDonald’s, Visa, and State Farm have all started NFT-related projects or ventures.
