Just Mercy, the 2019 film starring Michael B. Jordan as civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson, will be available to rent for free via digital platforms in the U.S. during the month of June. The announcement, posted to the film’s social media accounts and website Tuesday, comes as protests around the world continue in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
“We believe in the power of story. #JustMercy is one resource we can offer to those who are interested in learning more about the systemic racism that plagues our society,” said a tweet on the film’s Twitter account.
The film, based on Stevenson’s real-life work, focuses on his defense of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx) in a wrongful murder conviction case. McMillian, who was accused of murdering an 18-year-old white woman in 1986, was eventually released in 1993 after spending six years on death row.
“To actively be part of the change our country is so desperately seeking, we encourage you to learn more about our past and the countless injustices that have led us to where we are today,” a statement on the film’s social media accounts said. “Watch with your family, friends, and allies.”
