McDonald’s is considering bringing back Szechuan McNugget sauce after a new Rick and Morty episode brought the cult-classic dipping sauce back into the limelight.
Adult Swim treated Rick and Morty fans to the first new episode of the animated sci-fi sitcom since 2015 on Saturday as part of an April Fools’ Day surprise. The episode concluded as Rick pleaded with McDonald’s to bring back its Szechuan McNuggets sauce, a limited edition plum sauce introduced in 1998 to promote Disney’s Mulan.
“I’m not driven by avenging my dead family,” Rick said. “I’m driven by finding that McNugget sauce. I want that Mulan McNugget Sauce … That’s my series arc, Morty. If it takes nine season, I want that McNugget Szechuan sauce.”
Following the episode, fans were just as inspired as Morty to bring back the sauce. A petition on Change.org calling for the return of the sauce had more than 19,500 signatures as of Tuesday morning.
A corporate McDonald’s chef told Business Insider he would look into bringing back the sauce.
“I’ll see what I can do,” chef Mike Haracz said on Twitter.
There is real potential for a comeback — Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Mulan, which hits theaters in November, provides the perfect opportunity for McDonald’s to reintroduce the sauce.
