Here’s What to Know About Samsung’s Bixby

March 29, 2017, 3:24 PM UTC

Samsung has a new virtual personal assistant launching with the Galaxy S8.

Named Bixby, the assistant comes with thousands of capabilities, including run-of-the-mill features like the ability to set reminders and calendar events. Bixby can also answer user questions like its competitors.

But where it might shine is in the other tasks it can handle. For instance, Bixby can be used to handle mundane tasks like sending a file users have open on their devices to someone in their contact list.

Bixby can also interpret what users are looking at through their smartphone camera’s viewfinder and provide contextual information about the object in question. A book, for example, can be immediately evaluated for its average rating. Additionally, Bixby can help users search for images or get details about nearby places by using the camera.

Bixby is launching inside the Galaxy S8, a handset that Samsung announced at its Unpacked event on Wednesday. It can be activated by a vocal command like Apple’s (AAPL) Siri, but the Galaxy S8 also comes with a physical button on the right side that activates the virtual assistant.
