Thousands of Americans are calling for President Donald Trump to release his tax returns in one of the first White House petitions of his new administration.
Two petitions surfaced on the official government website just hours after Trump was sworn in to lead the nation’s highest public office. One seeks the immediate release of Trump’s full tax returns and has garnered more than 6,000 signatures as of about 4:30 p.m. ET.
The other petition, which has far fewer signatures, asks the President to “divest his financial and business holdings or have them administered by a truly blind trust.”
If a petition filed on the official government website reaches 100,000 signatures within 30 days, the White House has to respond.
Trump said at a news conference last week that he has relinquished control of his business empire to his two sons and has moved all assets into a trust to avoid having potential conflicts of interest.
The president spent much of his campaign evading requests to release his tax returns. Last week, he insisted only members of the press cared to see them and that most Americans “don’t care at all” about them.
