Hillary Clinton Hits Bernie Sanders Hard in Podcast Interview

April 6, 2016, 2:26 PM UTC

Hillary Clinton was interviewed on the Politico “Off Message” podcast this week, and she had some harsh words for her primary opponent Bernie Sanders.

When asked if Sanders was really a Democrat, she was less than diplomatic:

Well, I can’t answer that. He’s a relatively new Democrat, and, in fact, I’m not even sure he is one. He’s running as one. So I don’t know quite how to characterize him.

Sanders, remember, is a democratic socialist who has run and served as an independent for most of his career. He became a Democrat during this election cycle to run in the presidential election. While he was in the House and the Senate, he did caucus as a Democrat despite never officially joining the party.

Clinton also hit her Republican rivals in the interview, calling Donald Trump a “bully” and Ted Cruz “mean-spirited.”

Sanders beat Clinton in Wisconsin last night, and the two are set to showdown in New York later this month.

An earlier version of this story had the wrong name for the podcast Clinton spoke on. It is called “Off Message.”
