Hillary Clinton has won the Mississippi Democratic primaries, CNN projects, adding yet another Southern state to her list of primary victories.
Clinton, of course, was the First Lady of a Southern state, Arkansas, when her husband Bill was governor. She has longstanding ties to the African-American community, which makes up a big portion of the electorate in Democratic contests in these states. Her opponent Bernie Sanders, meanwhile, is a Northern liberal with very little ground game in the South.
Michigan is also voting on Tuesday. That race is expected to be much closer, as Sanders’ message of economic populism could play well in a state hit bad by the economic downturn.
