Trump vs. Clinton: Who’s the Bigger Loser on Social Media?

March 4, 2016, 3:40 PM UTC

Just how engaging are Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on social media?

Let’s just say Gary Vaynerchuk is not impressed.

Fortune sat down with the digital media expert to do a rapid-fire critique of the presidential candidates’ Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles. Right off the bat, he calls out Clinton’s Facebook profile (“It’s all very robotic”) before addressing Trump’s non-traditional social media strategy (“His social is 100% wrong in a lot of ways. The problem is… it’s working.”).

If there’s one thing all of the candidates are doing wrong, it’s that they receive hundreds of comments from supporters yet rarely engage with them, says Vaynerchuk.

“They just don’t give a crap about people. This is the sad truth,” he says. “This baffles my mind – you will not see any of these candidates take the 30 seconds to reply to [their followers].”

Yes, that’s a lot of replying to do. But Vaynerchuk sees it as time well spent.

The other thing he wishes he saw more of from the candidates: Selfies.
