The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2016 inductees Thursday morning. The list of newly honored artists includes Steve Miller, Cheap Trick, N.W.A., Chicago, and Deep Purple.
This year’s full list of nominees, which was revealed in October, included Janet Jackson, The Smiths, The Cars, Chic (their 10th nomination), The J.B.’s, Chaka Khan, Los Lobos, Nine Inch Nails, The Spinners, and Yes.
N.W.A. has been on the docket for three years, but this year the group’s biopic, Straight Outta Compton, brought them back into the national spotlight. When speaking to Rolling Stone about the honor, Ice Cube said, “So many people were opinionated about N.W.A. I think everyone now at this point, no matter how you feel about us, understands what the group actually did and what it means to modern music. I think the movie helped to get people to remember that.”
Chicago won the second ever public fan vote, and earned more than 37.7 million votes.
The fresh Hall of Famers will be honored at the annual induction ceremony on April 8 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, and HBO will film the event for future broadcast.
