Speaker Ryan And GOP House Leadership Speak To The Media After Party's Conference Meeting
WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 08: Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) and members of the House GOP leadership hold a news briefing following the weekly Republican Conference meeting at the U.S. Capitol December 8, 2015 in Washington, DC. The House is preparing to vote on legislation that would deny visa-free travel to anyone who has been in Iraq, Syria or any country with significant terror activity in the past five years and changes to the visa waiver program, which allows citizens from 38 countries to travel to the U.S. without a visa. One day after Donald Trump called for a complete halt to Muslim immigration to the United States, the highest ranked Republican in the federal government has a simple message for him — cut it out.

“This is not conservatism,” Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said, according to CNN. “Some of our best and biggest allies in this struggle and fight against radical Islam terror are Muslims.”

Ryan also added that the plan and Trump’s comments didn’t represent “who we are as a party.”

CNN noted that is uncommon for a Speaker to get involved in a presidential nominating race. Ryan does have some experience in the area, having run for vice president with Mitt Romney in 2012.

Ryan did say he’d support whomever ends up as the Republican nominee in 2016.
