By 2030, cities will be home to 5 billion people. Imagine the traffic jams. Urban Engines analyzes data from trains, buses, and tollways to create a traffic flow model. Then it works with government (on supply) and commuters (on demand) to improve peak-hour behavior. The firm cut congestion in Singapore by 10%. Up next? São Paulo, Brazil, and Washington, D.C. Says CEO Shiva Shivakumar: “We’re throwing intelligence into the cloud to understand what’s happening on the ground.”
