Increasingly, SUVs are the go-to vehicle for consumers across the car-buying spectrum; some even say they’ve replaced sedans as the family car model.
The most popular vehicles in this segment, the Ford Explorer, is getting a facelift. Ford (F) is unveiled the new version of the Explorer today at the Los Angeles auto show. The 2016 model year will be the 25th anniversary for the SUV.
The new model will feature parking assist, front and rear cameras, and a hands-free liftgate, among other modern features.
Ford also announced the debut of Explorer Platinum, a higher-end version of the SUV with fanciful touches such as Nirvana leather.
The declining price of gas has boosted sales of SUVs, with smaller SUVs becoming the fastest-growing segment so far this year. Since its debut in 1991, more than 7 million Explorers have sold in the U.S.
