Apple’s growing dominance of the mobile Web
FORTUNE — Two data points that counter the prevailing wisdom on Wall Street — at least as reflected in its valuation — that Apple (AAPL) is toast.
- The latest report from NetApplications, posted Monday, shows Safari’s browser share of the mobile Web growing to 61.79% in March, up from 55.41% one month earlier.
- The chart below from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster that shows iOS generating more than twice as much traffic as Google’s (GOOG) Android — despite the considerable advantage Android has worldwide in the sale of mobile phones. Munster offers three theories about why this might be:
“First, we note that with over 80% share of smartphone sales at AT&T and over 60% at Verizon in Q4, we believe iOS is the most popular smartphone platform in the US. Second, we believe that iOS users are likely more engaged with their phones on a daily basis than Android users on average. Third, we believe that iOS’s contribution from tablets, which are likely to generate more traffic than a smartphone, is greater than Android’s. We believe that iOS is likely to continue to lead in mobile traffic generation in the US for at least the remainder of the year.”
