At Macworld, an avian slingshot game wins top spot in seven categories

Source: Chillingo

Angry Birds hardly needs any more accolades.

The game — in which players use a slingshot to launch small flightless birds at pigs protected by increasingly complex but unstable structures — dominated Apple’s (AAPL) App Store for most of 2010. The $4.99 version is still the store’s No. 1 best-selling paid app in both its iPhone and iPad editions and the free version is No. 2 on the free app list.

It’s now available on Microsoft (MSFT) Windows, Nokia (NOK) Symbian, Palm (HPQ) webOS, Sony (SNE) Playstation and Mac OS X. The Google (GOOG) Android version was downloaded more than 1 million times in its first 24 hours. All told, more than 50 million copies had flown into circulation by its one-year anniversary in Dec. 2010.

You can buy an Angry Pig board game and Angry Pig plush toys. Now, according to Mikael Hed, CEO of the game’s creator, Rovio, there’s an animated cartoon show in the works.

The game never knocked me over, but I’m clearly in the minority because on Thursday at Macworld, 148Apps‘ Jeff Scott announced that the nearly 500,000 users who voted in his third annual best-apps competition have given Angry Birds the top spot in seven categories, including “best app ever.”

The full list of winners below the fold.
