Every day, the Fortune staff spends hours poring over tech stories, posts, and reviews from all over the Web to keep tabs on the companies that matter. We’ve assembled the weekend’s most newsworthy bits below.

  • Less than a month after Motorola filed a suit against Apple, Apple is returning the favor by suing Motorola for infringing on smart phone patents. (The Register)
  • Facebook reports a data broker paid app makers for user information. Some participating developers are on a six-month suspension as a result. (ClimbTheNet)
  • Huzzah! The 14-day Cablevision-News Corp. standoff is over, though bitterness between the two media giants remains, apparently.  “In the absence of any meaningful action from the FCC, Cablevision has agreed to pay Fox an unfair price for multiple channels of its programming including many in which our customers have little or no interest,” Cablevision said in a statement. (Wire Update)
  • The FCC fined Verizon a record $25 million for overcharging some 15 million users approximately $52.8 million. (technabob)
  • Sprint CEO Dan Hesse credits increased demand for the company’s 3g/4G-enabled MiFi Overdrive router to WiFi iPad owners looking for Internet access. (Boy Genius Report)
  • Microsoft agreed to buy Canesta, which develops and manufactures technology that senses objects in a room in 3-D. Acquisition terms weren’t revealed. (Tech Flash)
  • Beneficent or smart marketing? Microsoft also spent the week giving away 89,000 Windows Phone 7 devices to employees. Jealous? (ubergizmo)
  • The New York Times has a fairly interesting profile of former Twitter CEO Evan Williams. (Last month, COO Dick Costolo assumed the position.) (The New York Times)
  • Tomorrow, Supreme Court justices will convene to hear a case in which 11 states including Florida, Texas and California are urging the court to uphold a law that bans the sales of violent video games to minors. (Kansas City Star)
  • Twitter added 30 million users in the last two months, bringing total membership to 175 million. (Neowin)
  • The Xbox Live Dashboard update lands today. New features will include a tweaked look, ESPN3 and Netflix search. (Finally!) (File Front)
