Even though Android 3.0 Gingerbead hasn’t yet been released, a new version with a new delicious codename is rumored to be on the way.

Make room for Gingerbread and Honeycomb

Techradar is today pointing to ‘Android 3.1 Honeycomb’ as the next iteration of Google’s (GOOG) Android OS.  The site says that the update will be a minor release following the major 3.0 release of Gingerbread toward the end of this year.

The news isn’t going to immediately affect most Android users who are probably somewhere between 2.1 (Eclair) and 2.2 (Froyo).  In fact, some device manufacturers like Sony (SNE) and Dell (DELL) are still selling Android 1.6  in their latest smartphones.

Gingerbread, and likely Honeycomb, will be available to Android devices with a 1GHz+ processor, 512MB RAM and a 3.5+ inch screen, which are common today.  Gingerbread is expected to be released in the September-October time frame and make its way to handsets and TVs for Christmas.

This is what I think of when I hear “Honeycomb”
