Analysts that track Apple expect the company has sold just over 4 million Apple watches in the most recent quarter. Some observers would call that “tepid.”

Perhaps because of the soft demand, some are speculating that Apple (AAPL) is planning to debut a cheap, gold-version of the debut smartwatch that would be a version of the Apple Watch Sport – which is the gadgets maker’s cheapest model of smartwatch. Apple Watch Sport sells for $349 versus the $10,000 price that the gold version of the Apple Watch commands.

Of course, it is important to note that a potential gold version of the sport watch would be made not with actual gold, but with an anodised version of the standard aluminium body, reports Business Insider, which quotes commentary from an analyst that has speculated a new gold version of the watch could be on the horizon.

Apple is selling a handful of pricy watches, high-end gadgets that range in cost between $10,000 to $17,000. It is a bid to tackle the luxury market with exorbitantly pricy watches, though the company will likely only generate a small amount of sales for those high-priced watches. A gold version of the Apple Watch Sport would be a device more in reach for the masses, and so while price points won’t be super lofty, a boost in volume could help power the device’s unit sales.
