Maybe people who build glass stores shouldn’t use snowblowers by Philip Elmer-DeWitt @FortuneMagazine January 22, 2014, 3:24 PM EDT E-mail Tweet Facebook Google Plus Linkedin Share icons Source: 9to5Mac. FORTUNE — According to 9to5Mac‘s Mark Gurman, the cost of the pane of glass on Apple’s AAPL iconic Fifth Avenue store that was shattered by a snowblower Tuesday is $450,000, a figure he derived by dividing $6.7 million (the cost of the cube’s late-2011 renovation) by 15 (the number of glass panels that replaced the original 90). In retrospect, it would have been cheaper to stick with 90. FUN FACT: According to a 2010 Cornell University study, Apple’s glass cube is New York City’s fifth most photographed tourist attraction, after the Empire State Building, Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Grand Central Terminal.
