So it was, it was about a year ago that President Biden signed the inflation reduction act into law. And one key part of that act was some pretty remarkable rebates for low and moderate income households. As it stands. If you make less than 80% of the area median median household income, you can be fully refunded for up to $1800 a year in home energy costs and appliance upgrades uh for this next session. I'm, I'm happy to be talking to uh author, former Georgia House minority leader Stacey Abrams who has thrown herself into the challenge of, of getting people to avail themselves of these new rebates in order to electrify everyone. Uh Let me welcome to the Sage Stacey Abrams. You got you. Good to see you. You have some fan. I see all of you may not know this, but the governor of Georgia is sitting about 200 ft away in the uh uh in the next room. I wonder if we should get him in and have a show. We did. Well, ok, we don't do politics here. So, um uh I, I wanted to, first of all, let me say it's an honor to have you here you are. And, and all of you may not know this. We all know a lot about Stacey Abrams role in the voting rights uh efforts. But she is a true polymath, a renaissance woman. Um uh not only uh house minority leader, first black woman to run for the Senate uh but also a novelist, a couple of novels. I've downloaded them. I've gotten started a little bit actually, 15 books. Everybody got that number, 15 books. So I, I just want your Amazon queue to be completely limited. I I I'm I'm starting with the most recent one. If that's ok. Um Available at your local bookstore. I learned backstage. She is uh a, a foodie, a chef um which we're not gonna talk about in the short time we have here. Uh But this uh rewiring America, your role in electrification is really interesting and we'd love to start by having you talk about that. What are you doing? Why are you doing it? Why is it important? So, 40 2% of all carbon emissions come from the household. So it's what you use to wash your clothes, how you heat your home, how you cook your food, what you drive. So 42% of the emissions come from the home. Some portion of the investment to address climate change should come to the home. And the inflation reduction act added $8.8 billion in direct rebates and tax credits that go to families. So basically in real money, real money, $1800 a year in what we call an electric bank account, it will yield, it will leverage that 8.8 billion will leverage $859 billion in commercial activity because people have to go and buy these machines. We're talking about 1 billion machines that need to be purchased for the home over the next 10 years. And my job is helping rewiring talk about how we get this done because most folks, especially the ones we're targeting low to moderate income families. They don't know or they don't believe. And if they know and believe they have a cost, there's a cost interference. The upfront cost for trying to do this, trying to wade through a tax credit, trying to figure out how to get your rebate is hard. It creates a friction that stops them from even starting. How do you eliminate that friction? So I'm glad you ask rewiring America. We've built a tool, an very simple online tool to start that just helps you understand what you get from the IRA. But what we're adding to it are additional tools that help you find a contractor, help you understand where to get those machines, let you know what your family can afford and how to get it. Uh The two challenges that we're very aware of. It's the upfront cost. And so we're working, uh, we're actually bidding for resources to help cover those costs for the, to find the upfront. Exactly. And we will help you get your credits later. And then we're also making sure that you understand what it means and how it changes the cost for your home. So for example, if you get a heat pump, we think heat pump means heat. It actually means air conditioning too. And if you remember the heat bubble that was in Oregon two years ago, that killed all those people because they've never had central ac this saves lives. And as we watch more extreme events take place across the country. This is a way that we can protect our families, protect our homes and protect our future. Is this full time for you? It is not, but it's not a simple path. It is not. Is it working? Are you getting people over that friction bump? We are. So we actually have demonstration projects outside of. So there's a lot of work that's already being done in California on the east coast. And so we're intentionally in places not there. So we're in the Midwest, the northwest, southwest and the southeast. Shockingly, I'm doing a few projects here in Georgia. The goal being to show people what this can mean and use it to demonstrate to others that there is a way to make this work for all families. The Inflation Reduction Act was obviously a game changer for this country. We have been a laggard in terms of policy on climate and suddenly left to the head of the pack, at least in terms of incentivizing action like the one you're talking about. But critics have said it has an awful lot of strings attached. Uh you know, on bigger projects. You have, you run into these uh uh local sourcing, native sourcing, national security concerns. Um You've got a lot of labor rules tied into that. It's not only complicated for, for the constituents you're talking about. It's kind of complicated for everybody, even big companies. It's an awful lot of strings, but it's an awful lot of money. We're talking about $278 billion that have already been let to suit 272 projects, 44 states and 170,000 jobs that we believe can be created across the country. And so with that in mind, the goal is to use this opportunity to learn how to create this, not just for the short term, but to create a long term transition in our economy that keeps up with the reality of environmental change. So you're, you're a fan. Yeah, I, I want to change the subject a little bit to another because you point out this is not your full time job. You are a polymath. You have a, I have uh uh fingers and more pies than you have fingers. Um uh uh Another thing that's been a topic of conversation over the last 24 hours among this group is the spate of lawsuits challenging a variety of corporate diversity efforts. I know you're talking to some people about defending those about what's going on there. What's your view of what's happening and what can the people in this room do to make sure that they're not subject to legal action? Well, let's start with the end in mind. There's no way to avoid being sued because it's working that the attacks on DE I are directly a response to the effectiveness of actually matching our commercial side and matching our economy to our populace. That's a native good. But there are those who are very resistant to it who would like to both ignore the past and I would say want to manufacture a false future where we disallow participation from communities that for so long were not included. But we also know it is lucrative companies that participate in de I make more money when you add people to the roster. I mean, let's go back to rewiring one of the things we know about the energy economy. We need 1.4 million additional people just to take on the jobs for the residential side of electrification. But if they can't be introduced into those apprenticeship programs, because they're targeting populations that are typically not participating, then we're never going to get the workforce we need. I would say that first of all. Thank you for those of you who are willing to engage. Thank you for your bravery. But also remember your bottom line, you make more money when more people can afford to use your products and when we improve access in this country, we improve the bottom line for everyone. Lawsuits are designed not for victory but for a chilling effect. And the chilling effect is when you decide to unilaterally disarm for fear of being attacked. I'm in politics. If you do that, you never go anywhere. Unilateral disarmament only works if you already have everything you need. But Stacy having said that nobody in this room, nobody in this room wants to be caught up in this legal fight. No one does and they don't want to be caught up in the political fight either. So are there things they can do to minimize the risk? You can't avoid the risk, minimize the risk. So the the challenge is that the risk is a fundamental attack. This is not a question of how do you game the system? It is a fundamental question of whether or not we are going to address inequity and diversity. They're attacking military academies. We know that the military was the first major institution to engage in desegregation. And one of the lawsuits is seeking to end access to military academies. We know that people of color are more likely to be enlisted, but they are less likely to go through the military academies and have the means of access. And so I would love to give you the, the fun answer which is, oh, just keep your, keep pride and you'll be fine. But this is actually a moment for action. This is a transformative moment where we can do right? And do well, we can do good and do well. At the exact same time, you can urge yourself by making sure that we're creating a new narrative. Part of the way they're winning is that those of us who agree are silent and not this community. But there are so many who are going silent hoping that if they just stand still and keep their mouth shut, no one will notice them. They've already found you, they know who you are. And so the issue is it is more important that we bind together that we use our philosophical premise, which is that we want to do. Well, I'm a small business owner. We can do well and do good. But we have to defend the fact that it makes sense that more people have access to the and dream and that's your fundamental. You know, it's really important that you're saying that I one theme I've heard over the last 24 hours uh from members of this group is, hey, we're, we're, we're doing all the same stuff we were doing before. We just aren't talking about it as much. You're saying there's a cost to not talking, there's a cost and you and I have a mutual friend who has just been sued, not because she, she didn't stop talking about it, but she didn't know anyone else was paying attention. And they found her. We know that when you are silent, silent is often seen as consent, we are agreeing to the attacks. We are agreeing that they are correct. If we do not push back and put, I mean, you guys know this silence when you're, when your competitor is putting their narrative into the air and you are silent, your competitor wins. And the same thing is true on D I, this is not about changing your value system. It's about articulating those values. That's a strong message. Anybody, any questions, anybody uh want to uh further clarification on that comment. You know, it's really ironic that I'm getting silence in that sense right here, please right here on the front table. Stacy. Thank you for your leadership. Um What can business leaders do with regards to rewiring America? Get their employees? I mean, absolutely. And, and, and when you're done, can you pass the microphone to this woman sitting right in front of me? So we get her question. Yeah, go ahead. Uh But we are, we're going to ask employers because your employee, these, these, these rebates, they want this help. And so we will be creating a roundtable of businesses to help us push this information out. It makes it better for you because their costs go down and their money goes further. So we'd love to have your help. It's a great benefit. Yeah. Go ahead. Hi, Jackie Martin Fox Factory. I didn't have a question. I just want to thank you for your courage, your role model ship. If that's even a word and your resiliency, you said everything. I would imagine everyone here in this room wants to say and should be saying if not shouting from the rooftops. So thank you for that reminder of, of courage. Thank you. One of the ironies of this. Yeah, you got fans in this room. One of the ironies of this moment in sort of corporate history is companies are really stepping up and recognizing that things like climate change and inequity are existential problems for them in the long term. But I don't think they've gotten to the point where they realize that our political dysfunction is also an existential problem for them in the long term because so many CEO S who stand up on climate, stand up on, on social inequality, but say please, please, please don't get me involved in any kind of political debate. Uh uh because I don't know how to deal with it. I, I, and I understand the reticence but politics, politics is a stalker. Whether you want to be there or not, it's going to find you. So, my, my posture is, I don't have to have an opinion about everything, but when I believe something, I have to have an opinion about that. And I think the challenge is calibrating where your opinion matters and where it ties to your business. Bottom line. If what you do affects people and if what you're silent about will harm them, then you have the responsibility to speak up. It's well put. We were talking about that earlier. Quick question right here. Hi, Stacey. Thank you for everything that you do. So my question is going back to your combat action and voice and thinking about the lessons that corporate America learned in this, in their own racial awake awakening after George Floyd. So what would your advice be to corporate influencers frankly? Right. All these CEO S and C Suite leaders who have the podium and have the national ear, what can they learn from the, the actions they took in the voice that they use for George Floyd in this moment as we think about the future of diversity equity inclusion in 30 seconds or less. Talk about the successes. Right now, the narrative is only filled with the stories of failure or difficulty. We know that transformation is difficult. We know evolution is difficult. But when you tell the positive stories, it starts to create a counterbalance and that's where we start. Talk about how it's helped you improve your bottom line, how it's improved your workforce and how it improves your ability to deliver your product. When you start there, it creates an environment where more people can join to amplify the good and we can start to protect against the bad Stacey Evans. Great conversation. Late in the evening on November 3rd 2020 Fox News called the State of Arizona's election results in favor of Joe Biden. Soon after a series of potential voter fraud claims came from Fox Network. These claims specifically called out voter voting organizations, Dominion voting systems and Smartmatic in March of 2021 Dominion voting systems filed a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News with claims the News Network spread misinformation and conspiracy theories about Dominion last month, just days before heading to trial Dominion voting systems settled with Fox Corp for over $780 million. What may be one of the largest defamation settlement cases in us history to hear more about the impact of that settlement and what's next for Fox? Not for Fox? Sorry for Dominion voting systems. Please welcome Nicole Nolette, Executive Vice President of Operations for Dominion voting systems and Fortune editor at large, Mihal Lavra. Ok. Nicole is definitely not here to talk about what's next for Fox can speak to that. That's great. Um So, uh we're, we're gonna turn to you guys for questions very early on. I know when you introduced yourself yesterday. You got like a so I think people will wanna ask their own questions as well, but I'm gonna, I'm gonna kick things off here and I wanna start with something that was just in the news uh over the last uh day or so, which is uh these reports rumors that as part of the settlement agreement, which we just heard about, we all know about, um was this clause that Tucker Carlson would be fired? And do you wanna set the record straight for us here? I think you guys have already commented, but if you could please comment on, I would, I would love to continue to hammer this point. Home Tucker Carlson was not part of the settlement agreement between Fox and Dominion. Ok. And, and uh I think that's pretty clear. Um, but, uh, you know, this whole settlement was about this whole lawsuit was about um misinformation, defamation. Um And here we are again, you know, this kind of started spinning very quickly. So what does that tell us about what has changed and what has not? So, I think that's really interesting. I mean, number one, thank you so much for um for inviting me up here. I feel so fortunate to be part of this incredible group of women, um and to be able to tell my story and, and hopefully it resonates, um, little pieces of it will resonate with each of you. I just, I love this opportunity. So Thank you. We had two main goals when we, when we decided that we were going to take legal action against Fox News and, and several others. Fox is the first of seven legal battles that we have and we still have a very long road in this, in this legal battle. But um, it was, we had two mingles and number one was to get the truth out. And number two was to be compensated for the damages that Fox caused our company. I mean, our, our brand is destroyed at this point and we felt we wanted to get the truth out, the truth about Dominion, the truth about election and election processes and specifically the 2020 election. And um, and also, you know, compensate uh for those um the, the uh the destruction of the brand of the company. So there, there has been criticism out there, of course. Um as we all know that um an apology demanding an apology was not part of the settlement. And I'm curious to hear, I mean, from your perspective, um why wasn't it a part of the settlement? And, and, and what would it have done if anything if you had demanded an apology from Fox? Yeah. So the honest answer is is that it wouldn't have done anything. Um A forced apology on air was not something that was going to change. Our company was not something that was going to change the outcome or not. Something that was going to change elections and disinformation in the elections industry. And quite honestly, if we would have saw this through to, you know, some sort of jury decision, they couldn't have forced an apology anyway. And so it wasn't one of our main goals. Um We really just wanted to get the truth out there and I think we were incredibly successful at that. Um I wanna hear a little bit about your own personal story here because, um, while the company certainly took a big hit, um, you took a hit as well. Um, and, and you were docked and your parents, both navy veterans, um, house, their address was, was posted, uh, online. Um, and I, I think we all are curious to hear just what was it like for you personally going through the last few years? So it was, it's incredibly difficult. Um, it was, um, that moment in time and it wasn't just me, I mean, there are other employees at Dominion. Our customers certainly, um, have been threatened, their lives have been threatened. Um, this was, I, I was coming out of the doctor's office and I had missed a call from a customer and he, um, his customer is a very big customer of ours. Um, and he called and left me a voice mail and says I need you to call me back immediately and he, uh, forwarded me the, the link to this website that was enemies of the people which, um, just, it struck home, um, in an incredibly bad way. I mean, I'm a navy veteran. My parents are army veterans. And so to see that there was some, to see that there was anyone who would think that what I was doing was something contrary to democracy or to the goals of the United States was incredibly hurtful. And then to see, not just my safety threatened but my parents safety threatened because it was um you know, a picture of their house, the FBI is knocking on their door later that evening. And you know, to hear my mom go through that and to hear my mom have to have that experience when she's retired and she's worked her entire life to have a very boring retirement. She's worked very hard for that. That was incredibly unsettling and it fueled a fire that had started to burn right at that moment. Ok. Questions from the audience. Well, let me, let me, let me try to, to make some of it relatable and please just raise your hand. We'll, we'll bring a microphone over question over here and at any point, feel free to raise your hand and if you could stand up, introduce yourself. Um I live in Atlanta and so Georgia, obviously, you know, it's a little complicated. Um I don't really have a question. I think I just have a comment because we've been watching this play out for so long. Um And I just want to applaud the efforts of Dominion. I think it was a big step um for a company to take on a new channel like that and to take on a culture like a, a society with all these culture wars where we like politicized lifestyles and politicized uh personal choices and politicized reproductive rights. And the fundamental thing that even my, my mother, uh father and grandparents fought for and marched for was voting rights. And so I just want to say, thank you. I thank you very much. And um I really appreciate your comments and it reminded me of something that Jenny had said when you were interviewing her a little earlier this morning where she said, um she was really impressed with the women that were going out and seeking conflict and, and I was reflecting on our own situation like we did not go out and fight conflict. But what we did do is we stood up to it and we're going to continue. Like I said, this is the first of seven legal battles that we have and we didn't go out and seek this conflict, but we are standing up to it and that's really important. And I Kesha thank you so much for, for your comments. I think 10 years ago, if you had stood up here and said, you know, you work and Dominion, by the way, has been around for 20 years. Uh, but if you had said Dominion people would be like, oh, what's that? I wonder we have another question over here. Hi. Um, I'm Erica Fisher. I'm, um, with, um, a software company and we've been talking today and yesterday and in various forms about how hard the last several years has been for a lot of people at operating roles, but you win. Um, so not, not a, not a prize to win, but, um, thank you. And, um, I guess my question is for a lot of us who are on the either, you know, sort of middle of, or other side of various forms of crisis. How do you, when you get to the other side of it, or at least a pause point for you personally in your career? Like, where do you go from here? How do you think about your identity and sort of what you carry forward and finding a different rhythm or, you know, when the sort of curtain closes on the, um, adrenaline? Like, how do you think about that? Because I'm sure you didn't expect this to define however many years of your career at this point. That's exactly right. And that's a great question, Erica. And thank you so much because I haven't had much time to reflect on it. But as I reflect on the, the important priorities that we have right now. Number one, I mean, or one priority obviously are the legal battles. But number two, we have an incredible amount of, of women who are supporting elections, there are customers, they are other vendors who are supporting election technology and this this enormous cohort of amazing and tenacious and bright and driven women are protecting democracy right now. And so when I think about what, you know, the next step is or another really important kind of pillar of how I'm thinking about moving past these, these crises or these legal battles is that I still need to support these women that are on the front lines and they are, you know, protecting voters, they are protecting their right to vote, they are protecting the vote counts. And that is one thing that really keeps me going because it's what keeps Dominion successful and what keeps me successful in an operating role is really focusing on those customers and ensure that they have the support through the life of, of those those government contracts. Question question up here. Can we bring a microphone over? Hi, I'm Jennifer. So you talked about having to deal with your parents and the experience that they had, obviously, this is an issue for your company, but it also became a very personal issue. And so it lit the fire for you to want to fight as you thought about settling. How did you make the decision that the right decision for the company was to settle because at least from a outside looking in perspective, you were winning the narrative and there was a lot of like, take it all, all the way to the end. How did you sort of say, ok, we're at a point where this is enough. Um Or how did you make that decision? Yeah, that's an incredibly, I mean, that's an incredible question. And um it, it was, it wasn't that it was enough, but it was right when we were on the heels of kicking the trial off. Um, you know, our uh one of our big strategies was to, you know, to, to get the truth out. And we did have a lot of information that came out um as part of the discovery process and as part of the motion for summary judgment. And so we felt like we, um one of those goals we had accomplished um with all that motion for summary judgment, discovery information coming out into the public. But secondly, um as we thought about um a long drawn out trial, I mean, our estimate was that this trial was gonna last the better part of two months. Um And we thought about the emotional toll that it was going to take on our employees as they got called to the stand and testify. Um our customers and some of our other partners in the elections industry, uh we decided that, um that, uh you know, having gotten the truth out, um, and saving our customers and our employees. Um, a lot of hardship going through a drawn out trial that, um, it was the right decision, although, you know, very mixed, very mixed emotions about that. There's no question about it. We felt like it was the right, um, the right decision for our company and for our customers. And just to point out also, I mean, you obviously you had multiple goals with this lawsuit, but one of the main ones was to compensate for damages. And I think it just checked that box. Hopefully, I I, you know, honestly setting the precedent of one of the largest media defamation settlements, puts a huge exclamation point on this. And so, you know, for some people who may think that, you know, it, you know, it doesn't make that much of an impact. I think setting that precedent, I think it makes a huge impact and it gives me a talking point when I'm up here saying that, you know, we set a precedent and that's really, it's really important. And again, it's the first of seven. OK. We'll take another question, one more question over here. Uh Christina Deloitte partner. Good to see you again. Um So my question is now that you have this success and this great platform, what's your future strategy? Uh What do you plan to do with it? Yeah. So um they're trying to get her to talk last year by the way. That's true is a big step already. We, you know, are, we're still going to continue our legal battles. But we have what, what you all may not know is that pretty much every Tuesday somebody's voting. And so, you know, since the presidential, all of 20 21 2022 which is a midterm cycle and thus far in 2023 nearly every Tuesday somebody's voting. And that's just, it's, it's incredible to know that because it's throughout the nation, somebody's at the polls voting on something on a Tuesday, not all of our customers vote on Tuesday, but most of them do. So. Um The, you know, the the other strategy is just to continue to support our customers in these local and special elections that are ongoing in this, in this odd year. And the presidential cycle for 2024 is going to start earlier than it ever has. I mean, there are jurisdictions that are shifting their primaries earlier then Super Tuesday, Nevada is going to start early voting at the end of January if you can believe that. And so really the presidential cycle is we are on the doorstep right now and so continuing on the path of supporting our customers and being as prepared for these elections is, is one of our main focuses right now. Well, uh we are going to to wrap in a second here, but I just wanna um thank you for coming here and supporting this community and being a part of it and sharing your insights. I'm guessing you're quite a hit at dinner parties over the last couple of years. Hopefully, we didn't ask you any of the annoying questions you usually get, but really, really appreciate you being with us. Absolutely. Thank you for having me.

How e-bikes are challenging green transportation

So our focus on sustainability starts with the product itself. And so we're really focused on getting and putting the best products on the street. And so I think what a lot of folks are advocating for and what they see as the future is that we go from a two car household to a one car household with more trips taken on public transportation by foot, by bike, by electric bike, by cargo bike and by all the other future modes that will be smaller and more efficient. I'm Laura Fox, I'm the general manager of city bike for lift. Citi bike is a part of lift and it's a core part of how lift provides the world's best transportation services in new york city. We've been here for about 10 years already. Uh, D C boston over 10 years. The transportation is the largest sector for emissions that cause climate change and private car ownership is the largest portion of those emissions, so we need to get people to drive less. I really think that e bikes are car killers in the best of ways. Um, there's been a number of studies that have shown that when people buy an e bike themselves that they reduce their driving habits by about 70%. And a lot of the analysis in this space shows that if people just took about 15% fewer car trips, we could reduce overall transportation emissions by at least 12%. Electric micro mobility is the term that's used to describe 2 to 3 wheeled vehicles that are powered by electric battery and typically under a certain weight e bikes, electric scooters. Um, some folks would even call certain lighter weight electric mopeds, electric micro mobility, even though electric bikes have been around in china since the eighties, it really just started taking off in the US about five years ago and really picked up even more during Covid. And during the lockdown oftentimes you can imagine I'm the bike lady in the room who is getting people telling me, oh, that's nice. But no one's going to ride bikes. And I love saying, you know, last 3, 28 million rising 1.3 million unique riders at a time when not many new Yorkers were riding. We really have to optimize the operations themselves to ensure that we're being even as sustainable as we possibly can within the core operations first is one of the core problems of bike share is how do you match supply and demand? Um, and the term that we use to, you know, try to do that is called rebalancing. So bringing bikes from one location and taking them to another, um, or creating more capacity in one location itself. And so bike angels, which is an innovation that we've had in the system for about six years now is a core way that we reduce the vehicle trips required to take bikes from one place to another. My name is Rachel met and I think I started with the bike angels program soon after I became a member last fall, it's just a Gamification of the program where it will show you on the app, all of the docks and it will give a point value to each of the docks. So now I've been a member for over a year, but my membership has been extended by over six months, so I did not just have to pay my annual fee. Again, I don't have to do that for another six months, but I'll continue getting points and that will probably be pushed out and we see that for all the rebalancing work that we need to do across the system to meet supply and man by angels are a third of all of that work, if that reduces the number of lift trucks that have to move bikes around, that's fewer cars on the streets. And I love that as a cyclist and pedestrian to make our streets safer for everyone. A second piece within operations on that sustainability metric is how do we repair as many bikes in the field as we can to reduce the number of bikes that have to come back to depose. And then third is we think about the longevity of the hardware itself. The large majority of the emissions over the life cycle of the bike would be from manufacturing. So to get the lowest greenhouse gas emissions per mile of, over the lifetime, you want to expand the lifespan of that vehicle and that's often a challenge in the context of, because the vehicles are used very intensively, they're kept outside, you know, and sometimes that goal of expanding lifespan is intention with other pressures they might be facing, such as replacing the current fleet with new models that might have improvements or you know, be safer in other ways. And so we continue to bring that mindset of how do we design and pressure, test and reliability, test those products and bring in all of our operating knowledge to know what's going to really last at left in Citi bike, the need to be green and to make money are, you know, combined, right. If we were to put out a bad product or to have inefficient operations, we would lose money. And so really there's great incentives built into the program to deliver on outside of mode shift, which is a core part of the business model to ensure that we deliver the most sustainable operations um for the system. I think that there's a couple of different key parts. When we think about the future of micromobility for city bike, we're in the middle of $100 million investment to double the size of the city bike service area, bringing it to more and more new Yorkers at the end of it will cover 60% of new york city population, the more we can make these options available and make it easier to be environmentally conscious and be sustainable um the more likely more people are to do it. And I think in the future we'll see new types of vehicles, including some that are starting to come out that are enclosed three wheeled vehicles that have the, you know, the sort of footprint more of a bike but are actually like enclosed and protect against the elements. So we may see some evolution. But to date, micro mobility is primarily about electric bikes and electric scooters. And I think the transition toward electric micro mobility is only just beginning.

Hey, welcome to Fortune tech debate where we discuss the issues of the day in two minutes today we're talking about twitter, Elon musk is facing a court battle that may force him to buy the social media company even though he says he's not interested in doing so anymore. Well assuming that happens, what do you think the new twitter looks like? You know, interestingly enough, musk has said that he's considering making twitter into a quote accurate, relevant and not totally depressing news source, but you know, his comments kind of leave more questions and answers really because we pay reporters to create content for twitter and and if he does, does that open them up to lawsuits under the section 2 30 of the communications decency act And you know, other social media giants have fought for years to keep their uh companies considered as platforms rather than publishers. So I just ultimately, I think musk is stuck in a situation of buyer's remorse and he's just gonna struggle to turn twitter into a profitable firm. I think one of the things that you have to consider though is that trust in major media and news outlets is declining these days. Uh Abc Fox CNN all of them are lower in the recent survey by the american customer satisfaction index. Twitter though is up 11%. It had the biggest gain of any company. So there might be something into combining the two schools of thought. Yeah, I mean I think you made a good point like seven and 10 twitter users in the United States said they got their news from the platform according to a 2021 Pew Research poll. So there's definitely a market there. But I wonder with ad spend slowing and the economy moving into recession. If it's really the right move for twitter to turn to becoming a content publisher. Yeah, well no one has ever gotten rich at least recently owning a media company and Elon musk hasn't really shown a lot of patience for things like that. There is one more thing that we need to think talk about and that is Elon musk himself. He hasn't shown a lot of patience for opposing viewpoints and we saw that at SpaceX, Could that be a problem here? Yeah, I mean I think any time the ceo of a publisher is criticizing politicians or economists publicly then it's going to be an issue for your objectivity. So yeah, it'll be interesting to see how if twitter does become a publisher, how objective they can be. Yeah. Alright, well that's gonna have to leave it there, that's all the time we have today.
