American International Group rebounded impressively in 2021, posting $9.4 billion in net income, compared to a $6 billion net loss the previous year. AIG has been tightening its focus on property-casualty insurance; it cited gains from divested properties, stronger general insurance underwriting practices, and higher income from investments as reasons behind this year’s growth.

Total revenue for the world’s biggest companies fell 4.8% to $31.7 trillion this year—the first decline in half a decade.

The world's 500 largest companies generated $31.2 trillion in revenues and $1.7 trillion in profits in 2014. Together, this year's Fortune Global 500 employ 65 million people worldwide and are represented by 36 countries.

Global business is back. After limping through a worldwide financial crisis and economic slowdown, the 500 largest companies ranked by revenues shattered all sorts of performance records in 2013: They racked up combined revenues of $31.1 trillion, up 2.5% from 2012, and profits soared 27% to nearly $2 trillion. China’s 95 companies (up from 89 last year) posted $5.8 trillion in revenues. The U.S. has four fewer companies on the list than last year but remains (for now) the country leader, with 128 corporations on the list—including No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores—reporting $8.6 trillion in revenues. 

Wal-Mart stayed on top as its sales crept closer to half-a-trillion dollars. Apple moved into the top five. And UnitedHealth Group continued its steady climb.

Ghosting and Burn Out: What Dating Culture Tells Us About Modern Work

I have waited my whole life, whole life, like 15 years for to be on a mainstream stage that would let me have the words dating and work in the same sentence. So I feel like we have come a very, very long way. And today I'm gonna talk to you about this surprising connection and why I have followed this through line for so long and why it might be one of the most important signals that we can look at today. The world of dating, which is really about the world of possibility and what we think our, our hearts will experience in this lifetime. So, the first thing I want to let you know is that dating is not just something single people do. So whether you've been married for 20 years, or you're taking a break from dating, or you're secretly swiping on Tinder right now, dating is something that actually connects to everybody. Because what dating is really, it's about the early interactions. So a lot of times when I speak, people are like, hey, can you not say dating, can you say relationships? That sounds more sophisticated, that sounds more safe. And I always have to say no, we're gonna talk about dating. Because dating is about the initial interactions. Because those can shape so much. Here's another way to think about what dating is. I call it the 1st 1 to 5 interactions that you have with somebody. And today, those interactions may not be in person at all. They may be on a screen, they may be an emoji, they may be an email. Or they may be not written by that person at all. And so how we move through these early interactions determines whether someone's gonna be a friend or an acquaintance, a frenemy, someone you trust, someone you actually build something with. And those are changing at a rapid pace, and that's why it's so important to look at the world of dating because that is the best indicator of early interactions. I'm going to tell you a very, very short, non-romantic love story, otherwise known as a friendship. So I came to the world of corporate much later in life. I started my career in food service and hospitality, doing every position that you can imagine. And then when I finally got a job at a corporate place, I was so excited. I was like, wait, you mean I get free Post-it notes and Sharpies that are actually brand new? I had never experienced anything like this. And I was working in advertising and I was asked to create a PowerPoint presentation by the end of the week. And I had just started, and I was terrified. I knew a little bit about PowerPoint, but I wasn't actually that good and this was the place where people did really good PowerPoints. And I was like, oh my God, I worked so hard to get here and now I'm gonna get fired. And there was a woman a few cubicles away from me and she created these beautiful PowerPoint presentations. And I said, hey, I'm really sorry and I'm kind of embarrassed, but would you mind telling me how this works? And so for 2 nights after work, she ordered takeout and she walked me through everything there was about PowerPoint. And it was incredible, and she wasn't impatient, she was very, very encouraging. And at the end of that, She didn't just teach me how to use PowerPoint. She had actually imprinted on my heart. Fast forward 6 years, and I am a bridesmaid in her wedding. She became the best friend of my life. Now you might be thinking, couldn't you have like watched a YouTube video or Google this? And I could have. But I wonder sometimes if I had used a YouTube video or I had Googled it. Would I be standing next to her on the most important day of her life? Maybe Maybe not. And these are the questions that we're dealing with today. When we interact with people, the decisions that we make can lead us down very, very different paths. Dating and work have always had a relationship. They have shared language. And two examples of that are ghosting. And quiet quitting. Ghosting started in dating, and it was an indication of just leaving someone and not explaining why you were rejecting them. And quiet quitting started in work of people becoming disengaged. And the two areas borrowed from each other, and it actually makes a lot of sense. Because in both dating and work, we're trying to figure out who other people are. We're trying to see if we can build something. And sometimes we don't know what we're experiencing. We don't have the tools for how to handle the moment. And that's actually what's behind a lot of ghosting. It's not someone not caring, it's someone not having the language or the skills to meet that moment. So I truly believe that dating is one of the best places to look at for what's going to be happening in relationship culture more broadly. Just one example is that dating was the first place where people's personalities started to split. You had who you were on screen, and then there was the person that you met. And this caused a lot of daters, a lot of cognitive dissonance, because they had to put together different versions of people. Fast forward a decade and this same dynamic is happening at work. You can't just know who a person is in person, you start to know who they are in a document, who they are on Slack, who they are on Zoom. And while it's wonderful, it's also confusing at times. So an interesting thing happened in the world of work that also happened in dating. I think in work we remember this, right? In 2020, some people were remote. And overnight Everybody was remote. This same dynamic happened in dating. One day some people were dating online, and the next day, everybody was dating online. And what happened is that when everybody jumped into the pool at the same time, we didn't necessarily change the environment, we didn't necessarily prepare people for what it meant to be available all the time, or to have 400 people in your pocket. These are things that people aren't necessarily built for, but they think they should be built for them. And that is part of why it gets so confusing. It should be easy to be, to, you know, transfer my entire professional life to a screen. It should be easy to pick up my phone and swipe on people. But we're actually not built for a lot of these reflexes. And when people don't understand what's happened to them, when they don't understand how the system has changed, they tend to blame themselves. This happens in dating, this also happens in work. And when things change so dramatically, we lose things, and we don't always realize what we've lost until in some cases, it's been too late. So, at work, there are so many things that we've lost. And when you really sit and talk to people. And don't just engage with surveys when you really talk to them and say, what is it that forms your relationships at work? It's always the smallest things. Clearing someone's coffee mug, helping them format an Excel spreadsheet. Giving them that sandwich that you're not going to finish. Tapping them on the shoulder to ask them if they'll look at your work. Holding the elevator open for them. It's all of these small moments that got lost. And part of our job as leaders is to look at what we lose when we gain things like flexibility and accessibility, and make sure that we design proxies for them. So here's an interesting recent fact. 80% of Gen Z. I burned out by the dating apps and does not want to use one. But what does that really mean? Does that just mean they're rejecting something? And I spend a lot of time talking to Gen Z about their dating lives. Here's what they're concerned about. It's not the technology. What they're concerned about is how a screen will shape the experience of their heart. That's very different from just rejecting something. That's saying, hey, is this screen going to change my ability to connect with people, and ultimately to find love. And that's what a lot of people are thinking about when it comes to their work relationships. How is this impacting me? I'm getting so much, but what am I losing? So one thing to think about. Is we use the word connection, but one of the most important things to understand is that connection is so different between people, between teams, and different moments. So we can't just say connection in the same that we, in the same way that we do success succession planning or performance strategy, we also have to think about a connection strategy. Something that lives throughout the year to address the different moments and the different times. It's not one size fits all. You have to look at the team, you have to look at the dynamics, you have to look at what they want to accomplish, and you have to figure out what moments do I want to design for this moment. Because here's the last thing I wanna leave you with. What people are starting to say about love and about work is what is going to keep me human. Is the place where I'm at, is the relationship where I'm at, is the way that I'm doing something going to keep me as human as possible amidst all of this change? And that's what I want to leave you with. What people are thinking about, especially young people. Is what is going to be the experience of my human heart. And how can I think about that as I make, as I make decisions about relationships and also about work. Thank you so much everyone.
