Donald Trump addressed Hillary Clinton as “Secretary Clinton” during the start of a historic debate between the two presidential candidates Monday, and asked her if the name was acceptable.
The Republican presidential nominee, who has repeatedly referred to his Democratic rival as “Crooked Hillary,” prompted laughter from the audience and a smile from Clinton after first stopping to see if the formal name worked with her.
“Secretary Clinton, is that OK? Good. I want you to be very happy. It’s very important to me,” Trump said to Clinton, a former Secretary of State.
The two presidential hopefuls are facing off for the first time together at Hofstra University in New York. They were wrapping up discussions about their economic plans when Trump made the comments.
