Each year the Fortune 500 list ranks the biggest titans in business.
But there’s always a special focus on the companies with the largest gains in rank. Of the firms that appeared on last year’s list, here are the ones that soared to the greatest heights. They are the undisputed vaulters.

Companies from a mix of industries gushed to the fore in the newest class of the Fortune 500. There are retailers, auto dealers, energy suppliers, food processors, healthcare firms, cloud software sellers, and video streamers. Some notable leapfroggers include Dollar Tree (DLTR), Kraft Heinz (KHC), Salesforce (CRM), and Netflix (NFLX).

A caveat worth noting: The list excludes companies that are new to the Fortune 500, as well as ones that have risen to the list from a farther out ranking. For example, XPO Logistics (XPO), a supply chain manager based in Greenwich, Conn., rocketed far higher than any other firm: 556 places, to no. 353 from no. 909. Since no. 909 is past the Fortune 500 cutoff, XPO is not included below. We call these companies “arrivals,” or newcomers.
