The food and beverage giant joined with other largest soda companies Coca-Cola and the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group to pledge to reduce calories in sugary drinks by one-fifth over the next decade. It also announced a truce with activist billionaire investor Nelson Peltz, who had been urging the company to split its beverage business from its higher-performing snacks division. Eventually Peltz was able to get a seat on the board for his adviser William R. Johnson, a former CEO of H.J. Heinz.
