[MUSIC PLAYING] Welcome to Fortune Tech Debate, where we discuss the issues of the day in two minutes. Today we are talking about GameStop and whether or not it will go the way of Toys 'R' Us. Jeff, what do you think? GameStop-- are they still around? No, I'm just kidding. I've heard of the news, too, that shares of GameStop, the videogame company, are up because of an acquisition rumor or something like that. This raises the question, do they have a long term future? Will they escape the fate of Blockbuster, of Toys 'R' Us? And I'm pretty sure the answer is no. They sell video games, pieces of plastic that people now buy on the internet. Their fate is going to be the same. That's true, but GameStop does have something that Toys 'R' Us and Blockbuster did not have. And that is the fan culture around video games. There's nothing like it when you go to a video game store at midnight for the release of a big title. You see people cosplaying. They want to get their hands on the game as soon as possible. It's a great atmosphere. I don't know. I just think that culture is really going to help sustain it. It's a nice idea, but you know where that culture is now? On the internet. It's in chat rooms. It's in people talking themselves while playing the game. I think I'm all for-- I like the idea of a community and stuff like that. That's what bookstores do. And they're still around. But I think if you remember video stores, some of them on their way out tried to do this. I just don't think there's a business plan. As their culture, do people love it? Yes. Can you build a business plan and have stores and malls across America based on occasional midnight releases? No. Yeah, maybe, but I mean, there's also kind of a future proofing. If you no longer have that game available online, that suddenly disappears. If you then decide to get the physical copy, you still might risk losing all of your saved data. If you played a game for 80 hours or more, that can be devastating. I just think that it's the real way that you can ensure you have your product for good. Right. But if you put it on the internet, it's good chances you can store it in the cloud, lots of places, even better than storing it somewhere. I mean, I see what you're saying, but I think you're making a sentimental case for video games and GameStop. I don't think anyone has made it a business case for GameStop, and they're going to be gone in two years. Maybe, but I think all of those game purchases are sentimental.
