Small business loan lender OnDeck exists to give entrepreneurs a boost. That thinking extends internally, where employees get stock options as part of their compensation. “Spot awards” are not unusual either—and other perks, like massages and manicures, simply sweeten the deal. When the company’s loans first hit the billion-dollar level, staff popped champagne and received free headphones. “Everyone here was personally selected to do something great no matter what the position,” says one worker.
