Bright Horizons Family Solutions, which operates 1,100 childcare centers globally, offers its employees up to 32 hours of paid time off to volunteer each year. Last year the company sprang to action to help families at the U.S.-Mexico border. The Bright Horizons Foundation immediately began plans to create a “Bright Space” at the border to help families in need and raised $25,000 toward the effort through company and employee donations. Partnering with the Humanitarian Respite Center in McAllen, Texas, the foundation opened a Bright Space in just two weeks.
"Being Mexican-American myself, it was very hard to see the families coming into the respite center knowing that their journey there was so difficult. They get to the respite center, they’re tired, they’re hungry, scared not knowing what is going to happen next, and when they walk in the door and we’re able to clap our hands and let them know we're happy to see you, please come in and join us, you can see the relief on their face. It was amazing.” Today 400 to 600 people (adults and children) are passing through the Humanitarian Respite Center each day.
