When you have an abundance of oil and gas to pump up, you need equipment to get it out of the ground. This is why in recent years United Rentals, the largest equipment rental company in the world, has been aggressively snatching up companies supplying pumping equipment to the energy industry.
Its most recent acquisition of National Pump for $780 million will position the company deeper in shale gas exploration. United Rentals brought in $4.9 billion last year and is expecting $5.5 billion in revenue this year. —V.G.
