An independent oil and gas producer that likes to refer to itself as "America’s Oil Champion," Continental also boasts a founder and CEO, Harold Hamm, who was featured in the 2012 Time 100 alongside Rihanna and Jeremy Lin. Perhaps more relevant here (although certainly less entertaining) is that Continental is the largest leaseholder and producer in the Bakken play of North Dakota and Montana, which accounted for 86% of the company’s $3.6 billion in oil and natural gas revenues last year. Continental is in the middle of a five-year plan to triple production and proved reserves by 2017. —N.S.
