Cape Town–based Naspers is known as one of the globe’s most successful technology investors. Since Naspers’s early $32 million investment in Tencent in 2001, the Chinese tech giant’s market capitalization has soared to $555 billion (and Naspers’ to $71.6 billion). But in the South African media company’s home market? Not so much. That’s where Mahanyele-Dabengwa comes in. The veteran investor was appointed as the company’s South Africa CEO in 2019 to replicate Naspers’s smashing success in backing winners of the Internet economy. Her purview includes Media24 and the fast-growing e-commerce-oriented Takealot Group, as well as the VC-firm-like Foundry, through which Mahanyele-Dabengwa and her team seed promising local early-stage startups. Naspers is now betting South Africa’s tech industry is the future.
