Uniqlo Japan named company veteran Akaida as its first ever female CEO in mid-2019, tagging her as a possible successor to Tadashi Yanai, the 72-year-old founder and president of Uniqlo’s parent company, Fast Retailing. In her first full calendar year on the job, Akaida oversaw Uniqlo Japan’s response to the pandemic, which shut physical stores but made the retailer’s cozy sweatpants and soft T-shirts quarantine must-haves. In the first nine months of fiscal year 2021, with many stores reopened, Uniqlo Japan’s revenue rebounded 12.5% compared with 2020; operating profits soared 51%. And even in this era of the pandemic, cozy is still king; Uniqlo Japan says loungewear remains a strong seller.
