Scrimgeour became head of the investment management arm of British insurance giant Legal & General in July 2019, and has thrived despite the pandemic: Assets under management increased 9% year over year in the first half of 2020, to 1.2 trillion pounds ($1.6 trillion). Scrimgeour’s executive team is 46% women, but she acknowledged recently that the composition of her asset managers is “not where we want to be” in terms of racial diversity. She is optimistic that her firm and her industry will improve after this year’s “moment of potential inflection.” Legal & General Investment Management is also ratcheting up its pressure on other companies over environmental standards by publishing its climate ratings for more than 1,000 firms—and threatening sanctions, potentially including divestment from some funds, on those that fall short.
