This year hasn’t been the smoothest of rides for Liu, president of China’s ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing. While the six-year-old company, which is larger than Uber and other rivals, continued its meteoric rise, expanding into markets including Brazil, Mexico and Australia, it has also come under fire, Uber-style, for the killings of two separate passengers that used one of its services. While Liu and the leadership apologized for the tragedies and have vowed to improve safety—they plan to better vet drivers and audio record every ride—many in China remain outraged at the company. Didi Chuxing also recorded a more than half-billion dollar loss in the first half of 2018.
