Founded in 2010, The Urban Grape (UG) is a wine, spirits, and craft beer store located in the South End neighborhood of Boston. The store concept is simple: “Drink Progressively.” The Black- and woman-owned company employs a proprietary Progressive Shelving system of sorting wine by its body, instead of by varietal or region, which takes the intimidation out of shopping for wine. Additionally, UG has founded several complementary businesses: Urban Affairs (wine tasting events), Urban Cellar (fine and rare cellar stocking), and The Wine Club by Urban Grape (subscription wine service).

UG is deeply involved in the local community. It supports organizations including Rosie’s Place, Room to Grow, Joslin Diabetes Center, and USES. In 2020, UG fulfilled a long-term philanthropic vision to increase diversity in the wine industry by founding and endowing The Urban Grape Wine Studies Award for Students of Color at Boston University.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, UG installed customer-friendly text chat line for concierge shopping service, developed The Wine Counter—an outdoor, COVID-19 safe sales space for face-to-face service—and virtual wine tasting events. It has also supported surrounding businesses by organizing pop-up events at The Wine Counter. As a result, UG has seen sustained sales increases of over 30%.
