HIV/AIDS has ravaged Protus Onyango’s hometown of Sega, Kenya, leaving about 600 orphans among a population of 8,100. He recognized that one major impediment to their future was simply not having enough light to study by in the evening hours; many live with grandparents and caregivers who can’t afford kerosene. His remedy: solar-powered lanterns. In the upcoming school year, orphaned students in the senior class at three high schools will receive lanterns (many of them donated by Onyango’s co-workers) to study for exams, and pass them down to next class. “To me and my wife,” he says, “it’s about giving another person a chance.”
