Growing up in foster care, Michelle Buck-Gordon had dyslexia, and always struggled to read. But she loved to paint and draw. She remembers, too, cutting up curtains to fashion doll clothes. Not until she was adopted though at age 11 and encouraged at her new school, did Buck-Gordon realize the power of art in her life. “I just remember that feeling of not feeling stupid anymore,” she says. Now Buck-Gordon leads a twice-weekly art program she created for the Academy Charter School, a project of the Orangewood Children’s Foundation, where more than 70% of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch. Come June 6, her students will debut their work before thousands at the Fullerton (California) Art Walk, and she hopes to expand the program to area shelters, too.
