Super Typhoon Haiyan ravaged Marvin Jackson’s hometown of Tacloban City in the Philippines last November. Desperate to see his family, he arrived 12 days after the storm. His mother and relatives were safe, thankfully, though most of their houses were gone. Using what money he had—and 940 British pounds (a little more than $1,500) donated by his co-workers—Jackson bought food and medicine for other families in the area who were worse off. Before any outside help had arrived, he also led early cleanup efforts. The lack of progress in the city, still deficient in commerce and electricity throughout, has been deeply frustrating, Jackson says: “Nothing concrete has come.”
