Most teens aren’t looking to buy a house anytime soon, but Kurt Arehart wants young people in North Carolina—especially those whose families haven’t owned homes before—to learn how to get a head start. Arehart, a specialist in the mortgage industry, developed an interactive lesson plan, “A Home of Your Own,” to teach kids about building good credit, how mortgages work, and what makes someone either a strong or risky candidate for a loan. Through collaborations with Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Clubs, the Girl Scouts, and other groups, Arehart’s lessons have reached nearly 2,000 children statewide.
