Amid MassMutual’s 100-acre campus in Springfield, Jonathan Quenneville eyed a sunny corner and thought it could be a perfect spot for a garden that could provide food to those in need. The idea won approval from higher-ups, and in 2012, Quenneville built a 7,000-square-foot garden with various raised beds to grow vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, and butternut squash—all of which is donated to local food banks. Quenneville tends to the garden before and after work as well as on his lunch break; fellow employees pitch in on tasks like tilling, weeding, and delivering food. The results have been impressive: Last year, Quenneville says, the MassMutual gardeners donated just over 2,300 pounds of fresh produce.
