To combat childhood malnourishment in Haiti, Dan Schmitz (pictured above, left) led a team of 50 Abbott scientists and other experts over three years to design a facility that could manufacture a nourishing peanut-based paste called Nourimanba. Located in a former mango field in central Haiti, the project required the installation of new roads, a sewage system, and a generator to back up the electricity. The end result: an 18,000-square-foot factory that’s owned by the nonprofit Partners In Health and staffed by Haitians. It has already produced 50 tons of the vitamin-fortified therapeutic food—enough to treat 5,000 hungry children so far.
