Where Carmen King sees a need in Reynosa, Mexico—a border town near McAllen, Texas—she fills it. King, who has worked for Emerson for 18 years, has gotten her company and others to help repair three local orphanages, donating their labor and the needed materials. Last year she arranged to have doctors at Hospital Santander (most of whom volunteered their time) do surgeries on 20 children with cleft palates. She helped the local Rotary Club negotiate a deal with a hearing aid supplier in Matamoros, Mexico, to provide the devices at a discount to 400 seniors and some 150 children over the past four years. King has also helped hundreds of Emerson employees finish their junior high and high school education by arranging GED classes and graduation ceremonies on site. Her efforts, she says, are simply for “really beautiful people who unfortunately need help, they need a push, they need something.” And King is there to provide it.
