Something told Angelo Ramos to be concerned. Driving across a bridge over the Alicaocao River on his way home from work last September, Ramos caught sight of three boys washing a tricycle on the river’s bank. It was the rainy season in the northern Philippines, and Ramos watched as the swollen river rushed below him. Then, in the blink of an eye, two of the boys were gone, vanished into the current. When Ramos saw the third boy jump in after them, he knew he had to do something. Jumping out of his vehicle, he hopped the bridge railing and slid down onto a tangle of branches that had collected below. From there he spotted a hand above water, grabbed hold, and fished out two boys, ages 12 and 7, clinging tightly to one another. They were cousins. For hours, Ramos, joined by a search team, looked for the third child, the brother of one of the boys, but he was never found. Months later Ramos (standing above, left, with the two boys he saved) is still deeply affected. “It’s like it just happened yesterday,” he says.
