The electronics manufacturing company, based in Taiwan and better known as Foxconn, makes Apple iPhones, iPads, and iPods; Amazon’s Kindle; and a mountain of other tech gadgetry. Foxconn is the largest electronics manufacturer in the world, with revenues topping $175 billion in 2018. Yet the company’s scale isn’t big enough for the ambitions of founder Terry Gou, who recently resigned as company chairman to run for Taiwan’s presidency. The majority of Hon Hai’s factories are in China, but tariffs on Chinese imports might convince the factory to open more capacity overseas. The Taiwanese firm has scaled back plans to construct a factory in Wisconsin, however, much to the chagrin of the local government, which coughed up $4 billion in subsidies to get the plant.
