In its last full year under long-time CEO Dieter Zetsche, the German carmaker struggled. While revenues grew and it out-sold arch rivals BMW and Audi globally, new car sales in Europe slumped, and the company disappointed investors with sharply lower profits, driven in part by regulatory issues. Its van division fell behind on customer deliveries following the need to re-certify the vehicles met tough new environmental standards. In Europe, Daimler agreed to voluntarily recall 774,000 vehicles under pressure from regulators who had questioned whether they met emissions standards.
