More so than other Chinese state-owned banking giants, the Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) has a focus on the country’s less well-to-do rural population. Its loans to rural households rose 53% to $30.8 billion in the five years through 2017 and this past year the bank issued an additional $15 billion of loans in the rural areas targeted by Beijing’s poverty alleviation drive. Meanwhile the bank has steadily reduced its ratio of non-performing loans since 2015, shedding a further 0.22 percentage points this year to reach 1.59%.
